Real Betis Balompié has issued an urgent call for responsibility from its supporters following serious incidents during their UEFA Champions League match against FC Porto. The club has identified several individuals for setting off flares and throwing bottles during the October 14th match at La Cartuja, prompting a disciplinary procedure from European football's governing body.

The landmark 3-2 victory over the Portuguese side was marred by two serious incidents documented by UEFA delegates. Flares and smoke were ignited in the Gol Sur stand at the start of the match, while bottles of water and other objects were thrown from the fondo and preferencia stands during the game.

Serious consequences

The club warns that any similar incident in the future could have very unpleasant consequences for all fans in a significant year. UEFA previously sanctioned Betis for incidents in the Conference League semi-final in Florence, imposing a ban on selling tickets to away fans for the match against PFC Ludogorets in October 2025. "However, in the stands two extremely serious incidents were recorded that could lead to important consequences for Real Betis Balompié and for the Béticos," the club said in an official statement issued on Monday.

The club's security service has identified those responsible and will rigorously apply its membership regulations, leading to expulsion from the club's social body. Also, Betis reserves the right to take civil action to recover any UEFA fine from the identified individuals.

Current sporting context

This appeal comes at a time of strong sporting performance. The team sits fourth in La Liga with 19 points from six wins, one draw and two defeats. Their recent form is positive, with three wins, one draw and just one loss in their last five outings. Following a heavy defeat to Barcelona (2-5) last weekend, the team now prepares to visit eighth-placed Celta Vigo on October 25th.

President Ángel Haro and the board insist that the team's great moment and its enormous social growth cannot be damaged by these attitudes. "The great moment our team is experiencing and the enormous social strength that Real Betis Balompié is enjoying cannot be damaged by these attitudes that must be eradicated from the green-and-white support," the statement added. The warning is clear: further sanctions could prevent fans from travelling to Champions League away matches for which many have already booked flights and accommodation.
